Melbourne Victory appoint new football coach

Melbourne Victory Thursday unveiled Ange Postecoglou as their new coach just days after he led Brisbane Roar to back-to-back A-League championships.

The Greek-born Postecoglou on Tuesday announced he was quitting Brisbane after two-and-a-half years in charge, having taken the team to consecutive A-League titles and twice qualifying for the Asian Champions League.

The former Socceroo, 46, will be the Victory's fourth coach in 13 months after Ernie Merrick, Mehmet Durakovic and Jim Magilton were all either sacked or released.

"It's a massive club, it's got massive expectations, it's got a massive fan base and that presents different challenges for me as a coach," Postecoglou told reporters after signing a three-year contract.

"As a coach, you've always got to be a little bit like a shark. If you stop moving you die, so I considered I needed a new challenge."

The Victory have won the A-League twice but missed the finals this year.

Rado Vidosic has taken over as Brisbane head coach and will be in charge when the Roar play FC Tokyo in the AFC Champions League in Japan next week.
