FAKE GOOD

The Bureau of Customs (BoC) yesterday destroyed P300 million worth of fake merchandise. Among those shredded were pirated Louis Vuitton, Channel, Gucci, La Coste, Breitling, Balenciaga and Hermes bags and wallets. It was the biggest seizure of fake goods by the BOC this year. The counterfeit products were confiscated by the BOC-Intellectual Property Rights Division (IPRD), headed by Zsae Carrie De Guzman. The IPRD is a unit under the BOC -Intelligence Group, under Deputy Commissioner Danilo Lim. The goods were seized during an inspection earlier conducted in a warehouse at the ACLEM Building in Binondo, Manila. "We hope this campaign today will send a clear message to traders that the BOC will not allow smuggling to flourish, especially on items that will have tremendous impact on Philippine labor and the economy," Biazon said in a statement. "We will not allow the Philippines to be a dumping ground of counterfeit goods, if only to enhance the country's competitiveness as an investor-friendly nation," he added. (Jenny F. Manongdo)

ANTI-LITTER DRIVE

A Quezon City councilor reminded barangay officials that they are free to arrest the litterbugs provided that these are supported by barangay-based ordinances. Third District Councilor Jaime Borres said that it is about time for barangay officials to stop the throwing of waste and discard on the streets by enforcing environment rules. He noted that the city government could save millions of pesos if only the city's rivers, canals, ponds, esteros and drainage mains are free from non-biodegradable materials. "Tapping barangays in the city's anti-littering drive will complement the environmental police personnel deployed by the city's environmental protection and waste management department to apprehend individuals who indiscriminately throw their garbage," Borres said. He added it is vital for the barangays to be involved and learned how to be self-reliant in adopting measures for the protection and preservation of the environment. (Chito A. Chavez)
