One of the premier names in luxury vehicles seeks to become one of the leaders in electrification, as Jaguar Land Rover unveiled not one, but two plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) on the opening day of the MIAS Wired event.
Without much ado, Chris Ward, president of Coventry Motors Corporation, introduced the Range Rover Sport and Range Rover PHEVs to viewers of the online event.
During the video presentation, Ward highlighted some of the Range Rover Sport PHEV’s prominent features, most notably the 2.0-liter turbocharged Ingenium gasoline engine that’s aided by an 85kW motor generator and 13kWh high voltage battery. This hybrid pairing helps the vehicle deliver a whopping 398hp and 640Nm, effectively mixing dynamic and sustainable performance with traditional capability, comfort and refinement that the Land Rover brand is known for.
The Range Rover Sport PHEV is Jaguar Land Rover’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. Badged P400e, the new model’s total available power output, available through the permanent four-wheel drive system – delivers a 0-100kmph acceleration time of 6.0secs. The Sport PHEV’s maximum speed sits at 220kmph), while the all-electric range is 30kms.
The Range Rover Sport also lets drivers can select from two driving modes to adjust the vehicle’s power management to better suit the needs of the situation.
Parallel Hybrid mode the default driving mode, combines gasoline and electric drive. The driver can optimize battery charge or fuel economy by utilizing one of two charge management functions: The SAVE function which prevents the battery charge dropping below a pre-selected level, and the Predictive Energy Optimization (PEO) function, enabled by entering a destination in the navigation system, uses navigation information to intelligently manage electric motor and gasoline engine to maximize fuel economy.
Electric Vehicle (EV) mode – enables the vehicle to run solely on the electric motor using the energy stored in the battery, the ideal solution for quiet, zero emission journeys.
At the front, intelligent Pixel-laser LED headlights elevate the striking new façade, complementing the redesigned grille nicely. The new bumper accentuates the Sport PHEV’s more aggressive profile. The new PHEV derivative also includes access to the 7kW on-board charger hidden behind the Land Rover badge on the right side of the grille, for added charging convenience.
Inside the cabin the new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, dubbed ‘Blade,’ is reportedly the brand’s most advanced ever. Two high-definition 10-inch touchscreens form the centerpiece of the minimalist cabin, combining a “futuristic, elegant feel with an intuitive, engaging interface and unrivalled functionality.”
In-car connectivity is enhanced with up to 14 charging points, including a domestic plug socket to keep laptops and other devices running. The introduction of the Jaguar Land Rover Activity Key also brings new levels of convenience to the Range Rover Sport, allowing customers to lock and unlock their vehicle without the need to carry a key fob – perfect for outdoor excursions.
The Range Rover Sport PHEV sells for PHP9.99 million.
The second vehicle that Ward introduced is the full-size Range Rover PHEV, which he goes on to describe as “the most refined and quietest Range Rover, ever.”
The Range Rover PHEV comes with the same powertrain as the Sport version, but the added size and heft slows the acceleration time down to 6.7secs. However, the EV-only range is improved, up to 51kms.
Inside, a cabin pre-conditioning system gives the Range Rover PHEV a leg up over its Sport counterpart. With this system, occupants can pre-cool or pre-heat the cabin before getting into the vehicle without starting the engine, making each and every car entry that bit more comfortable.
The effortless performance and driver comfort of the Range Rover full-size SUV is improved with the addition of Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go. This allows the vehicle to maintain a safe distance from the car in front and to follow it to a stop and pull away again, if the car stops moving for less than three seconds.
A Steering Assist feature further helps keep the vehicle centered in its lane by applying moderate steering interventions with the driver’s hands on the wheel. The technology uses lane markings and, or where no lane markings can be detected, the path of the vehicle in front. Switching lanes or braking deactivates the system.
The Range Rover PHEV also comes with a Regenerative Braking feature which captures and stores kinetic energy in the battery, every time the driver steps on the brakes. This is then used to power the electric motor, thereby ensuring that torque is immediately available whenever needed.
Interested car shoppers can own the Range Rover PHEV for a cool PHP12.49 to PHP12.89 million.
Ward also broke cover on “the world’s smartest five-seater sports car,” the Jaguar I-Pace.
“The all-electric I-Pace is a transformation in driving experience, and something you have never experienced before,” Ward assured.
As the most awarded electric SUV ever, the I-Pace helped Jaguar win the European Car of the Year award for the first time in 2019.
Unveiled this July, the all-electric I-Pace is powered by a 90-kW lithium ion high-voltage battery. Two electric motors deliver power to where maximum grip is available among all four wheels. Thanks to this powertrain, the I-Pace manages 395hp and 696Nm of torque, and is capable of accelerating from a standstill to 100 kmph in just 4.8secs. All these figures are made possible with zero emissions.
Full charge would take 12 hours and 48 minutes using the bundled 7-kW charger, ideal for home charging. Like the Range Rover PHEV, the I-Pace is also capable of regenerative braking, which allows it to harness energy during deceleration.
The Jaguar I-Pace retails for PHP7.59 million.
