Michigan Lt. Gov.: ‘I can’t wait to send Donald Trump home for good’
Michigan Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II (D) expressed his optimism for his state during the late hours of Election Day, saying his state was going to win the electoral votes for Vice President Harris.
“The volunteer effort in Michigan is the biggest one we’ve ever seen,” he said on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” on Tuesday evening. “We’ve built the kind of apparatus we need to win in Michigan.”
Gilchrist and host Jon Stewart referenced former President Trump’s rhetoric about Detroit, with Stewart saying he’s baffled as to how the race could be so close in the state. They also referenced Trump’s comments about the Arab community, as the state is known for hosting the nation’s largest Arab majority.
Gilchrist said Michiganders used the offensive comments as motivation to turn the state blue, given voters “don’t want a president who insults them.”
“To come here, insult to us and to say that we’re not capable of [big things], and it’s offensive, and so I can’t wait to see Donald Trump home for good,” he said.
Michigan is one of the key battleground states in the 2024 presidential election, holding 15 electoral votes. It has yet to be called in favor of either candidate as polls closed at 8 p.m. EST.
