Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has sent his condolences to his former colleague Pep Guardiola after the Manchester City manager’s mother died from coronavirus.

Dolors Sala Carrió died aged 82 from coronavirus, which resulted in an outpouring of condolences from across football for the Manchester City manager and his family.

The Premier League champions said in a statement: “The Manchester City family are devastated to report the death today of Pep’s mother, Dolors Sala Carrió, in Manresa, Barcelona, after contracting Corona Virus… Everyone associated with the club sends their most heartfelt sympathy at this most distressing time to Pep, his family and all their friends.”

And Arteta, who worked as understudy to Guardiola at City between 2016 and 2019, is among those who has been in touch to offer his condolences.

“‘I’ve been in touch with him… he was worried about his parents before because they’re getting older and they’d been trying to isolate,” Arteta told Sky Sports.

“It’s really sad news. I know the family really well. I send my condolences to them and hopefully they can go through that all together.”
