YOUTH ACTIVITY

Kabacan, North Cotabato (PIA) - The Moro People's Community Organization for Reform and Empowerment, Inc. (Moro People's CORE) in this town empowers youth participation in order for them to contribute in the community's advancement. As this developed, the group recently conducted a lecture on capability build-up. Moro People's CORE executive director Zaynab Ampatuan said that participants in the activity were students of Kuntaw Silat in Barangay Poblacion. Kuntaw Silat is a Maguindanaon martial arts, which is a project of the Moro People's CORE in a bid to promote the Moro culture.

POWER SUMMIT

Cagayan De Oro City- Concerned about the worsening power problem affecting some 20 million inhabitants in Mindanao, power stakeholders, multi-sectoral leaders, power users, and suppliers are set to converge here in an effort to help alleviate the unwanted situation. Spearheading the confab are the management and technical personnel of the 33-strong members of the Association of Mindanao Rural Electric Cooperatives (Amreco), officials and leaders of the Mindanao Congress of the Advocates for Renewable Energy and Rural Electrification and Development, Mindanao University of Science and Technology, and the Institute of Power Sector Economics. CARAGA REGION

Butuan City - The Caraga Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit of the Department of Health-Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD-13) yesterday reported that dengue cases have increased to 937 where 11 deaths had been reported, prompting authorities to rise the alert level in the region. A report from the DOH-CHD-13 showed that the dengue cases increased from January to April, this year, to 937, which is 143 percent higher compared to last year's 386. DOH Region-13 Director Dr. Ariel I. Valencia urged local officials not to be complacent during the summer season, adding that even with the warm weather, dengue-carrying mosquitoes can still breed and infect people. (Mike Crismundo)

AGRI SCHOOL

Surallah, South Cotabato (PIA) - A public agricultural school in this town got a commitment of P500,000 from the Region-12 office of the Department of Agriculture (DA-12). DA-12 Regional Executive Director Amalia Jayag-Datukan pledged the additional assistance during the recent 13th commencement exercises of the Surallah Agricultural National High School where she was the guest of honor. She said the school could make use of the aid to fund its research activity.

A.R.M.M. CONTEST

Cotabato City - In the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), candidates of the rival Liberal Party (LP) and United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) are crossing party lines for varied reasons summarized into one - personal or political convenience. In a recent grand political rally, UNA gubernatorial bet for Maguindanao Tocao Mastura openly endorsed the candidacy for ARMM governor of caretaker-Governor Mujiv Hataman, an LP stalwart. Hataman was surprised but he welcomed the endorsement, warning though the UNA bet not to expect favor from him. One of the close rivals of Hataman in the ARMM gubernatorial contest is Pax Mangudadatu. (Ali MAcabalang)
