Mindhunter: David Fincher says serial killer series is ‘probably’ over
Fans of Mindhunter might have hoped for a third season, but David Fincher has suggested that won’t come to fruition.
The director told Vulture in a new interview that the serial killer thriller series is most likely over for now.
Asked whether the show is “done” in his opinion, Fincher responded: “I think probably. Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show.”
He said there were talks of taking inventory after he was done shooting his film Mank, coming to Netflix in December, but doesn’t see a third season happening right now for budget reasons.
“I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two,” he added. “And on some level, you have to be realistic about dollars have to equal eyeballs.”
A Netflix spokesperson confirmed to Vulture that a third season is currently not in preparation, but added that things might change “in five years”.
Fincher is an executive producer and director on Mindhunter, an adaptation of the true-crime book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit, released in 1995.
The first season was released in 2017, and a second one followed in August last year.
