Ministry Of Funny asks straight people 'ridiculous' questions LGBT folks get all the time

Local online comedy group Ministry Of Funny shared a video on Saturday (1 July) of comedian Haresh Tilani asking people on the streets the common questions frequently posed to those in the LGBT community.

Shared on the same day as Pink Dot 2017, Haresh is seen asking heterosexual people on the streets in Singapore several ‘awkward’ questions and making presumptuous comments, such as:

  • “Straight people hanging out together definitely must be together, right?”.

  • “When did you decide that you were going to be straight for the rest of your life?”

  • “Was there something that turned you straight?”

  • “What is the straightest thing you have done?”

  • “Don’t you think you’re flaunting too much of your straightness?”

Interviewees looked confused after being asked if they have always been straight.

Several other funny moments in the video included Haresh asking an interviewee how he knew he was straight, to which he responded, “I think my parents told me I was straight.”

Another interviewee was asked if he was attracted to men or women, followed by whether he “prefers the vagina over the penis”. “That’s a weird question,” he said in response.

Some Facebook users praised the video for raising awareness about the stereotypes against the LGBT community in a humorous manner. Others, however, were against the video, with one particular comment getting more than 300 reactions.

An excerpt of the user’s comment states, “This line of questioning is provocative at best, doesn’t help the LGBT community at all, doesn’t seek to convince and will never gain acceptance this way.”

There were also those took a more light-hearted approach by laughing at the reactions of the interviewees, while others said they were just there to read the comments. The video has since garnered more than 450,000 views, 6,000 shares and 400 comments as of press time.
