I’m always trying to suss out new Japanese restaurants in Singapore and while MIZ Japanese Restaurant has been around for quite awhile, it somehow remains a well-kept secret. The small eatery is a bit of a walk from Outram Part MRT station but trust me when I say it’s worth the effort.

Deceptively quiet from the outside, the actual restaurant is located on the second floor and is always busy during lunch hours. Informed office folk have been taking advantage of the affordable lunch sets for years, served by friendly Japanese staff.

You can expect the usuals on the menu (at seriously affordable prices and portions) but there was one standout dish for me — five kinds of sashimi on rice for only $13.80.

The Kaisen Jyo Chirashi ($13.80) came served with miso soup and a good amount of wasabi. Fresh pieces of seafood sashimi sat atop a bed of sushi rice, looking almost too pretty to eat.

The types of sashimi used vary according to availability, but I was happy to have my salmon and tuna staples. This is definitely one of the more value for money chirashi bowls in Singapore and I’m surprised it’s been kept a secret for this long.

You can even just have Salmon Chirashi ($11.80), Maguro (Tuna) Chirashi ($12.80) or opt for Kaisen Toku Chirashi (Seven kinds of sashimi) ($16.80).

Besides really affordable chirashi, MIZ Japanese Restaurant also serves lunch sets that come with a side salad, rice, miso soup and pickled vegetables.

The Chicken TERI Set ($8.80) features quite a large portion of perfectly grilled chicken and is ideal lunch food to help get you through the rest of your work day.

Fans of tempura will be glad to know that you’re definitely getting your money’s worth with four large pieces of prawn tempura in the Ebi Furai Set ($9). It’s hard to find a Japanese meal like this for under $10 these days.

The prawn tempura was properly coated in breading and retained its crunchiness, delicious when dipped into a mayo-sweet soy combination.

A long list of Sake gleamed at me, but it was only 1pm so I settled on an Iced Genmai Green Tea ($2) instead. MIZ Japanese restaurant follows strict operating hours so do take note that the last order for lunch is at 2pm.

It does open for dinner as well though, and I’ll definitely be back to try some of the a la carte dishes.

Expected damage: $8.80 – $20
