COVID-19: Mediacorp artistes under probe for possible safe distancing breaches – report
SINGAPORE — A number of Mediacorp artistes and others are being investigated for allegedly breaching safe distancing rules at a gathering to celebrate actor Jeffrey Xu’s birthday, according to a report by The Straits Times (ST) on Thursday (24 December).
The Ministry of National Development (MND) told the newspaper that it was alerted to the incident and is investigating.
"Investigations are ongoing in respect of possible breaches by the various parties," a spokesman said, who didn’t mention any names.
"MND and other government agencies take a serious view of such breaches, and will not hesitate to take firm action against those who are found to have violated safe distancing measures."
A photo of the incident showing Xu holding a cake and 12 other people standing close to one another has been circulating online, with all of them not wearing a mask.
Xu, Shane Pow and Terence Cao, who are Mediacorp celebrities, have apologised via the broadcaster following the circulation of the photo on social media.
Mediacorp told Shin Min Daily News that the trio confirmed that they were at the gathering and said they "deeply regret" their actions, according to the ST report.
Under current safe distancing rules, social gatherings are capped at five persons per group outside a residence while a maximum of five visitors can gather at households at any one time.
The maximum number of persons allowed in both settings will increase to eight from 28 December, when Singapore enters Phase 3 of its reopening.
