'India, US Share Values, Interests': Modi, Kamala Harris Issue Joint Statement

In his first meet since the Joe Biden administration took over early this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, 22 September held bilateral talks with US Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington DC.

While issuing a joint statement, Harris said that India is an important partner of the United States.

PM Modi, who is on a five-day-visit to the United States, also met Australian counterpart Scott Morrison.

Earlier, PM Modi met several dignitaries including Qualcomm CEO Cristiano R Amon, Adobe Chairman Shantanu Narayen, and First Solar CEO Mark Widmar, among others.

PM Modi, Kamala Harris Issue Joint Statement

US Vice President Kamala Harris, in a joint statement issued with PM Modi, called India an important partner of the United States and praised India's COVID-19 fight and climate change efforts.

"I know that India takes the issue of climate crisis seriously. We believe that the US and India working together can have a profound impact not only on the people of our nations but the world," Harris said.

"On COVID-19, our nations have worked together. Early in the pandemic, India was a vital source of vaccines for other countries," she added.

harris said that when India experienced the surge in the cases of COVID-19, the United States was proud to support India in its need and its responsibility to vaccinate its people.

PM Modi expressed gratitude for the help provided by the US during the second wave of the pandemic in India.

"India and America are natural partners; we have similar values, geopolitical interests, and our coordination and cooperation is also increasing," he said.

Another Chapter in Strategic Partnership with Australia: MEA

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called the meet between PM modi and Scott Morrison "another chapter in our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Australia."

"Discussed regional & global developments as well as ongoing bilateral cooperation in areas related to Covid-19, trade, defence, clean energy & more (sic)," the MEA tweeted.

'Will Invest $40 Bn of Assets in India in Next 5 Years': Blackstone Group CEO

"I had a very good meeting with the PM. I told him that Blackstone had already invested 60 billion US dollars in assets in India, and over the next 5 years, we're planning another 40 billion US dollars of assets," Stephen Schwarzman, CEO of Blackstone Group, was quoted as saying after his meeting with the PM Modi.

"India has been Blackstone's best market for investment in the world. It is the fastest-growing country in the world now. So we are very optimistic, and we are proud of what we have done in India," he added.

"This is a very friendly govt for outsiders, they are reform-oriented and objective. I would give them an extremely high grade as being good partners for people who like to bring capital into the country to bring jobs," Schwarzman further stated.

'Great Potential for Investment In India': General Atomics CEO After Meeting With Modi

"It was an outstanding meeting. We spoke about technology and the confidence in the policy reforms that are coming in India and the great potential that India has from an investment perspective," General Atomics CEO Lall said after his meeting with Modi.

Alluding to India's new drone policy, Lall stated, "These are very laudable policies, prescriptions and reforms that the PM and govt have taken. I think that will certainly catalyze a lot of interest and investments in India."

"There are a lot of potential areas of collaboration that we're in discussions with, I think US companies and many of my colleagues in US companies see India as a very promising destination," he further noted.

"It's always been such a pleasure to hear about his vision for how he wants to expand India. Among the key topics we talked about was continued investment in innovation, he said he believes that technology is the way to help move things forward," Adobe Chairman Shantanu Narayen was quoted as saying after his meeting with Modi.

"For us, our biggest asset is people. Anything that happens with respect to encouraging education, having digital literacy helps Adobe. We're very supportive of more emphasis & interest in education," he added, alluding to the National Education Policy (NEP).

"PM Modi and Shantanu Narayen, CEO of Adobe discussed Adobe’s ongoing activities in India and future investment plans. Ideas to leverage Digital India flagship programme in sectors like health, education and R&D were also discussed," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

"PM had a good meeting with Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm CEO. Mr Amon expressed his desire to work with India on ambitious digital transformation programmes including in 5G, PM WANI & others," sources told news agency ANI.

Amon reportedly expressed interest partnering with India to work in the field of semiconductors.

"PM Modi assured Qualcomm that India will proactively work on the proposals made by them. He spoke about the incredible opportunities in India and that India is a big market," sources told ANI.

23 September: Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

He is also, according to ANI, slated to meet global CEOs in Washington DC. The Heads of Qualcomm, Adobe, First Solar, General Atomics and Blackstone will participate in the meeting.

In addition, he will be meeting top executives of certain American companies, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, ET reported.

The prime minister is, further, expected to attend a gala dinner hosted by President Joe Biden – an event at which Vice President Kamala Harris is likely to be present.

24 September: Modi will take part in a bilateral meeting with Biden. He will also attend a meeting of the QUAD countries – consisting of India, Japan, US, and Australia.

He will also hold bilateral meetings with Vice President Kamala Harris and Japan PM Yoshihide Suga.

25 September: The prime minister will return to New York, where he is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly.

The prime minister will return to India on 26 September.
