Both Cupid and the stork worked extra hard last year -- 2014 saw the highest number of marriages since 1997, and a significant increase in the number of babies born to Singaporeans.

The National Population and Talent Division (NPTD) said in a media release today that there were 24,000 marriages involving at least one citizen last year. That's a 10 per cent rise compared to 2013.

Births too registered an increase -- some 33,000 babies were born to Singaporeans last year. This is an increase from around 31,000 babies in 2013, the report said. As a result, Singapore’s total fertility rate inched to 1.25 from 1.19 the previous year.

The increased number of marriages were partly attributed to the greater availability of Housing Board flats, and partly to the children of the generation of baby boomers entering marriageable age, the report said.
