What Is The Most Photographed Food In Singapore?

Number one

If ever there is a nomination for the world capital of “foodporn”or food photography, Singapore would get a well-deserved first place. And here is why:

1. Singapore ranks highest globally for smartphone penetration. Nine out of ten citizens have access to a smartphone, according to the the Global Mobile Consumer survey conducted by Deloitte in 2014. Yes, we can’t live without our smartphones.

2. We are crazy about food in Singapore, we might have mentioned it already. But this is a topic we can talk about forever.

3. Singapore is a melting pot of cultures, a real “rojak” where people are different yet so open. That’s why Singapore is one of the first places to catch the latest trends, and embrace the fusion influences from all over the globe.

So together with the HopHop Chef team we started researching what would be the most photographed dishes in Singapore. Of course we consulted the Holy Grail of Singapore foodporn’s obsession – Instagram.

Did you know, that #sgfood is the most commonly used theme-based hashtag in Singapore, supporting more than 850.000 photos on Instagram already?

Initially we thought it would be the world famous chilicrab. Every tourist eats a chili crab in Singapore. But #chilicrab hit only 15.000 photos.

Then we tried Singapore-native #fishheadcurry or #curryfishhead, but together they only hit 9.000+ photos on Instagram.

And though #Laksa (16.000+), #Bakkuteh (38.000+), #NasiPadang (24.000+), #Wantanmee (10.000+), #Rotiprata (11.000+) did very well with a lot of photos coming from neighbouring countries, the absolute winner is our good old friend #ChickenRice.

The hashtag #ChickenRice is used for 92.000+ photos.

Sharing memories of food in Singapore

As many say a family dinner isn’t complete without anecdotes from senior members of the family about “how we used to eat this when we were young (or how one only paid two cents for a bowl of noodles), may be one day you will be sharing anecdotes how you used to take the best pictures of your food and get the highest numbers of likes for food in Singapore.
