A devastated mother has spoken of her “unbearable pain” after her three-year-old son was run over and killed by his father’s pick-up truck at a farm.

Ianto Jenkins was playing on a bike with his sister and cousin on 3 August when he was hit by a truck and trailer belonging to father Guto Sior Jenkins, 31.

The three-year-old suffered “significant injuries”, an inquest heard, and died at the scene in Efailwen near Clynderwen, Pembrokeshire, Wales.

His mother Chloe Picton, 27, said she collapsed to the floor when Guto, her former partner, called her with the awful news.

She told Wales Online: “He said, 'It’s Ianto, Chloe, he’s been killed.’ I just fell to the floor.”

Ianto would have turned four on 18 September, when Chloe brought his sisters Seren, six, and 19-month-old Daisy-Mae to his grave to sing happy birthday and share some cake.

“The pain I’m going through is just unbearable,” said Chloe.

“It will never go away. I close my eyes and all I see is Ianto. I see him everywhere, always smiling.”

She said she had rushed to the farm after the phone call but was kept away from seeing Ianto by officials until later.

“‘I want to be with my son,' I told them. 'He’s on his own.' But they only let me see him in the hospital when he was in a better environment.

“Seeing him lying there, dead, was heartbreaking. Seeing your child so cold and lifeless is hard. I started tucking him in because I was concerned he was cold.”

Chloe said she had dreamed about Ianto last month.

“I’d asked my friends, 'Why can’t I just have one more chance to see him and hug him?’

“That night I dreamt that I was with him and he wanted a cuddle with me – it was like my one last chance to have my wish. But then Seren woke me up and that chance just faded away.

"He will always be in our hearts forever. We mention him every day because he’s part of the family. I will always be a mother-of-three. They will know who their brother was – he was a beautiful character."

She said she last spoke to Ianto on FaceTime two days before he died. He had been staying on his father’s farm for a week.

“He was crying because he wanted to speak to mummy,” she said. “He said to me, ‘I miss you, I love you, I’ll be home soon’, and I said, ‘I’ll see you on Friday’.”

Chloe said local farmers carried out a tractor run in Ianto’s memory.

“They went past his grave and tooted their horns. He loved farming and he was going to follow his dad’s footsteps.”

An inquest in Llanelli, south Wales, heard investigations by the police and the Health and Safety Executive are ongoing.

Coroner's officer Hayley Rogers told the inquest opening: “At 7pm on 3 August, police received an emergency call reporting that a child had been involved in a collision with a piece of farming machinery.

“Inquiries at the scene established that Ianto was playing with his sister and cousin when a pick-up style vehicle and trailer collided with him.”

The inquest has been adjourned for four months.

Following Ianto’s death, Guto's mother Meinir, 61, said: “No one is to blame.

“Ianto was playing in his new bike in the backyard and my son just didn’t know he was there.

“He didn’t see him. He heard the sound of his pick-up hitting something and when he stopped and got out to look, Ianto was lying on the ground motionless.

“It is just heartbreaking. Poor Guto, I don’t know how he’s going to live with this. He is completely devastated.”
