SINGAPORE — A Singaporean couple were charged on Thursday (12 November) over the alleged murder of the woman’s 11-year-old daughter earlier this month.

The man and woman, both 26, appeared on video link and are said to have caused the death of the girl between 6 and 10 November at a flat in the western part of Singapore.

Each faces a charge in High Court of murder with common intention. The woman is the biological mother of the girl, while the man is the girl’s stepfather.

None of the parties, nor the location of the flat, can be named due to a court-imposed gag order.

The police were alerted to the unnatural death of the girl on Tuesday at about 1.20pm. The girl was conveyed unconscious to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital by ambulance at about 11am on Tuesday and was pronounced dead at 12.40pm.

Police arrested the couple believed to be involved in the death. The couple are to be remanded for one week to complete the investigations, revisit the scene of crime and recover evidence.

During the court appearance, the man asked to see his son via video call, while the woman also asked to see all her three sons.

The woman told the court that she had two sons of whom she shared joint custody with her ex-husband, and she needed to settle childcare and school matters with her ex-husband.

She asked for bail for a week to do this, but District Judge Tan Jen Tse noted that there was no bail for her offence.

The duo will return to court on 19 November.

A person who is convicted of murder in Singapore faces the death penalty.
