TADIAN , MOUNTAIN PROVINCE – This town take pride in the indigenous varieties of rice grown by generations of locals.
In fact, during the annual Lang-Ay Festival and other trade fairs, Tadian's booth is one of more sought-after since people expect to see all sorts of grains, root crops, fruits and other native products on display.
Most noted of these products are the different varieties of rice such as the “balatinaw”, which is organically grown glutinous rice touted as healthier and more nutritious than ordinary white rice.
“Balatinaw is a product of hours of manual pounding, which makes it a bit more expensive than ordinary varieties,” said Tadian's municipal agriculturist Grail Galaus. A kilo of balatinaw rice sells for 90 pesos.
The Red Intan rice, which as its name implies is red in color, sells for 85 pesos per kilo. Another rice variety called Baay, known for its aroma, sells for 80 pesos a kilo.
Aside from rice, another interesting product that they usually bring to trade fairs in Manila is a flour made from cassava and sweet potato.
Galaus said they hope to bring more native Tadian products to Metro Manila so people from the city can be more familiar about these indigenous products.
“This would help boost tourism in our province but more importantly, it helps the livelihood of farmers,” he said.
