Putrajaya (The Star/ANN) - A transfer of prisoners (ToP) arrangement between Malaysia and Thailand could be introduced soon so that inmates can serve their jail terms in their homeland.
Malaysian Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said both countries felt that such an arrangement would be helpful, particularly in finding a resolution to the situation in south Thailand.
He said that although the number of prisoners detained in both countries was not alarming, having the arrangement "will send a message to crooks" that neither Malaysia nor Thailand was a safe haven to them.
"Thailand is very keen with the arrangement. In fact, they are willing to implement it immediately.
"I think that is possible since we already have a law on the matter," he told a joint press conference with Thai Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung here yesterday.
Hishammuddin and Chalerm earlier discussed several other security matters, including an extradition treaty, transborder crime and combating specific crimes.
