5 Aug – The latest update from Disney spells both good news and bad news for fans who have been patiently waiting for "Mulan's" theatrical release.

The live-action "Mulan" finally has a new North American release date, 4 September 2020, but it will not be opening in cinemas.

Instead, the movie will be making its premiere on the streaming platform Disney+.

"We thought it was important to find alternative ways to bring [Mulan] in a timely manner," Disney CEO Bob Chapek said, as quoted by The Verge.

For territories where the Disney streaming service isn't available, however, the movie is set to be released in cinemas on the same abovementioned date.

So far, Disney+ is only available in Australia, Austria, Canada, Channel Islands, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Japan, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and United States.

"Mulan" will not be readily available for Disney+ subscribers upon its release, however, they will have to pay an extra USD29.99 on top of their usual USD6.99 subscriber fee.

The Niki Caro-helmed movie, with a star-studded cast made up of Crystal Liu or Liu Yifei as the titular warrior, Donnie Yen, Gong Li, Jet Li and more, was originally slated to open in North America on 2 November 2018.

It was later rescheduled to 27 March 2020, but the pandemic forced it to be postponed to 24 July and subsequently 21 August, before it was postponed indefinitely late last month.

So far, Disney has only announced "Mulan's" move to its streaming platform, the long-postponed "The New Mutants" and the Scarlett Johansson-starring "Black Widow" currently remain on their respective August and November release dates.
