Myanmar’s Phandeeyar-backed online tutor booking startup MMTutors secures investment

MMTutors, an online platform that connect students with tutors in Myanmar, has secured an undisclosed sum in funding led by Seed Myanmar Ventures (erstwhile VIMIC), an early-stage technology fund.
Trust Venture Partners Myanmar, a local corporate finance advisory firm, and angel investor Aung Htun also joined the round.
The edtech startup will use the money to aggressively grow the platform with an aim to upgrade Myanmar’s education system.

The high school matriculation exam plays a critical role in the Myanmar education system. Every year, more than two million high-school students sit for this exam (more than 400,000 of those in Yangon itself), most of who use private tuition. Despite the increasing demand of reliable tutors, parents and students are still facing difficulties and challenges in finding professional, reliable and effective tutors.

Understanding the needs of parents and students, MMTutors was founded by three young entrepreneurs having collectively over 16 years of teaching experiences.
The company claims it helps parents and students find the most suitable tutors by matching the tutors and students based on their needs and preferences.
“Since we were in high school, we have had challenges with the teaching methods of teachers and our pace of learning styles. Tutors are always needed in our education system and parents always struggle with getting a reliable tutor to spice up the learning skills of their children. Parents often comment that the quality of tutoring varies greatly and the right tutors are often unavailable,” said Phoo Pwint Eain, Founder of MMTutors.
“We established MMTutors to help eliminate the burdens of parents. Using the advancement of technology development, we are confident that we can make a promising change in the Myanmar education system. MMTutors will be a hub for tutors and customers, providing reliable tutors and a professional learning source to customers as well as part-time job opportunities to tutors,” he added.
“We believe education to be the greatest equaliser and we are strongly confident MMTutors will add value to this sector. The technology platform that MMTutors is building will no doubt facilitate the most efficient and affordable marketplace for students and educators,” said Shinsuke Goto, CEO of Trust Venture Partners.
Currently, MMTutors has over 800 registered tutors. The company aims to expand the market to all over the country and become the learning hub.
The startup was initially mentored by Phandeeyar Accelerator in October 2017. The startup also received US$25,000 as part of the programme.
