Najib congratulates Modi over BJP state election victories

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today congratulated his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi over the victory of the latter’s Bharatiya Janata Party in state elections.

“I spoke to PM @narendramodi to congratulate him on his victory in several state elections. Looking forward to my visit to India,” he said in a Twitter post.

Polls were held from Feb 4 to March 8 in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur while counting was on March 11.

The Indian prime minister visited Malaysia in November 2015.

Malaysia and India have developed close relations as New Delhi seeks greater engagement with Southeast Asia as part of Modi’s ‘Act East’ doctrine.

A report from New Delhi last month said India and Malaysia were working on the dates for Najib’s visit to India.--BERNAMA
