PEKAN: Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak has urged party members to abide by party decisions and not dispute them for personal gain.
Najib, who is also Prime Minister, said that this is a necessary part of party preparations for the 14th general election (GE14).
"If we dispute party decisions when they do not align with our personal aims, we would become the "gunting dalam lipatan" and "duri dalam daging" (Bahasa Melayu sayings equivalent to “wolf in sheep’s clothing”) during GE14," he said.
Najib, who is also party division chief, was speaking during the opening of the 2017 Umno Pekan branches’ and wings’ annual assembly at Dewan Amphitheatre, Bangunan Umno, here today.
He said that party members must always prioritise the aim of Umno over their personal interests, and avoid factionalism.
"If we are loyal to the party based on the principles of wala', our party will be strong," said Najib.
He said this is particularly important in a parliamentary democracy, which is subject to quick change, even as a result of misinformation.
"This happens not only in our country, but also advanced nations like the United Kingdom, which (is exiting) the European Union. This (decision) was made based on a campaign (driven by) misinformation."
"This is leading to a historical change for the UK, which cannot be (reversed)," said Najib.
Also present at the event was deputy party division chief Datuk Abu Bakar Harun, Puteri Umno division chief Malia Irdawatie Khairuddin, and Putera Umno division chief Datuk Shahrudin Ahmad.
