KUALA TERENGGANU: A RM250 million dregding will be undertaken to deepen the Kuala Besut estuary for the benefit of fishermen and boating actitivies.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said details of the dredging, along with other development projects, would be announced during the two-day official state visit by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on April 15-16.
He said Najib was scheduled for a ground-breaking ceremony for the dredging project on April 16.
“Kuala Besut is set to be Terengganu’s tourism gateway to promote fishing, maritime and other activities.
“It is a very strategic and significant location as it faces the South China Sea,” said Razif.
Later that day, Razif said Najib would launch the ‘Jom Bantu Rakyat’ people’s housing assistance at the site of the Idaman Rakyat Housing scheme in Santong, in Paka, Dungun before having lunch with the rakyat.
“While there, the prime minister will hand over household items and furniture to two homes, and facilitate the building of a new home for an underprivileged family,” said Razif.
It is learnt that one of the homes to be visited by Najib is that of a former Umno Dungun wanita chief Zaleha Long.
Najib would be given a rousing welcome a day earlier at the Sultan Mahmud Airport before proceeding for a ground-breaking ceremony for a housing project in Bukit Nanas, Tepoh.
On another matter, Razif said he would reserve Mondays each week to visit each of the 32 state constituencies, especially the areas ruled by the Opposition, to address the needs of the people.
“We do not want the rakyat to be neglected and I will personally go down to the grassroots,” he said.
Razif also dismissed rumours of a state Barisan Nasional cadidates list being circulated in preparation for the 14th general election (GE14).
“Only I and the prime minister know of the actual list,” he said.
When asked if the present 17 BN candidates would be retained for GE14, Razif said: “That is a secret.”
