KUALA LUMPUR: Sports and Youth Minister Khairy Jamaluddin today called for the public to stop paying attention to controversial rapper Namewee.
He said if the public continues to take notice of the provocative 34-year-old artiste, he will continue to garner publicity.
"To me, we are all aware that he is an idiot. So, we should just ignore him.
"If we continue to (take notice of) people like him, (he will get) more publicity," Khairy said when asked about Namewee’s Chinese New Year video, which has been deemed offensive.
The minister made his comments after the launch of Skuad Operasi Sihat Negaraku TN50 (SOS TN50) here.
Last week, Namewee uploaded the CNY-themed Like a Dog music video, in which he and other individuals dance “indecently” in front of the Prime Minister's Office in Putrajaya.

The video, which went viral, earned the ire of many quarters, with some urging the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to investigate the rapper.
Yesterday, Federal Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said that Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, had been arrested to facilitate a probe into the video.
The rapper was detained at the Federal Police Headquarters after his statement on the Like a Dog video was recorded.
Prior to his arrest, on Feb 18, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said that police had opened up investigation papers on Namewee with regard to the video.
"I leave the matter to the respective authorities to probe, and will not stop anyone from carrying out their investigations," Khairy said. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
