KUALA LUMPUR: Women, in particular, those with children to care for, should equip themselves with various skills which would allow them to gain additional income by working from home.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said this when commenting on the high unemployment rate among women in the country.

Nancy said that the government and a number of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have been organising various programmes and trainings to help women to gain new skills to generate income for their families.

“Many women have to give attention to their families. There are many challenges faced by those women who have children and are working.

“We are aware of this situation. Hence I urge women to equip themselves with skills that would enable them to gain income (by working from home),” she said, adding that they can consider setting up online businesses.

“They can learn to bake, make handicrafts, or sew for instance,” she continued.

Nancy was speaking to reporters at a meet-and-greet session with women in the public transport industry at the Pusat Bandar Damansara MRT Station here today.

Also present were Express Rail Link chief executive officer Noormah Mohd Noor.
