Narrow escape for 57 construction workers as ceiling collapsed

KLANG: Fifty seven construction workers cheated death when the ceiling of a banquet hall in Centro Mall partially collapsed earlier today.

The construction workers, all of whom are foreigners, were working in the mall, which is currently undergoing renovation, when the incident took place at about 10.45am.

It is understood that renovation works have been on-going for the past month and it is about 80 per cent complete.

Klang Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the construction workers escaped unhurt as the ceiling had gradually collapsed.

“They managed to run to safety and there were no one trapped in the debris,” he said, when met at the scene today.

Yusoff added that the premises would be sealed for a week or two to enable the relevant authorities to carry out investigations.

“The cause of the incident is yet to be determined at the moment. We will wait for the investigations results from the Construction Industry Development Board and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health,” he added.

Meanwhile, Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Mohd Sani Harul said a team of 30 firemen from the Shah Alam, Sungai Pinang and Kota Raja stations were deployed to the scene.
