With over 27 years of experience under her belt, Global Artistry Director Jane Richardson for Nars Cosmetics is a veteran in the beauty industry, having clocked in hours glamourising some of the best known faces in showbiz and on the runways.

Her hands have touched famous faces like Tilda Swinton, Diane Kruger and model Kristen McMenemy, and she has created looks for fashion houses like Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs and Erdem. In short, she’s travelled around the world with a bag full of cosmetics and a handful of knowledge she’s generously spilling onto us to absorb.

Recently, Richardson took some time off her busy schedule to divulge some useful beauty tips and secrets we all could use, especially in an interesting time like this, amid the pandemic and ever-changing weather pattern.

1. Wearing makeup under your face mask

“If you’re wearing makeup under your face mask, use a primer underneath, followed by your makeup and a setting spray. Personally, for me, the use of a setting spray allows for the makeup to ‘sit’ on the skin. Just spray your skin until it’s totally wet and then pat it dry.”

2. On creating long-lasting foundation coverage

“Are you using active ingredients like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and hyaluronic acid in your beauty products? Those active ingredients may cause your foundation not ‘to stay.’

Another interesting tip is to use foundation as a concealer. “I do this because I’m old-school, but I still do it. Use your fingers or a beauty blender,” Richardson adds.

To start using foundation, split the face to the left and right side. “Our eyes are the focus area. Blot on the centre of the forehead, and push it up and out. The fingers make it look and feel like skin.”

3. Fingers are your best friends

At Nars, Richardson says the team uses fingers to blend; as for her, she feels it’s “totally natural.”
