NBA: Rudy Gobert sprains knee in Jazz win

Joe Johnson scored the game winner as the Utah Jazz defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 97-95 in a playoff opener that saw them lose their star centre Rudy Gobert to injury.

Johnson hit the winner at the buzzer but Saturday's victory could prove to be costly as Frenchman Gobert suffered a strained left knee in the opening minute of game one of their best-of-seven series.

Gobert had to leave less than 20 seconds into the contest after colliding with Clipper player Luc Mbah a Moute.

The 24-year-old centre from Saint-Quentin was helped off the court and carried to the locker room. It was unclear whehther he would be avilable for game two of the Western Conference series.

He is expected to undergo a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan to determine the extent of the injury.

Gobert averaged 14 points, 12.8 rebounds and a league-leading 2.6 blocks per game during the regular season.

He appeared in 81 games during his fourth season and his 66.1 field goal percentage was second in the league to Clippers centre DeAndre Jordan.
