Volunteers of animal welfare group Purely Adoptions were shocked when they came across a “grossly neglected dog” slumped along the common corridor of an HDB block along Ubi Avenue 1.
The group had been alerted to the case back on Aug 22, but nothing could prepare them for the appalling condition of the emaciated pup, which was simply left to wither away outside a flat. Images uploaded in a Facebook post depicted the dog being horrendously thin, with its rib cage and spine protruding out. Its eyes were dry and white with cataracts, while it had a mouthful of rotten teeth and gums.
According to the post, rescuers tried to get hold of the poor dog’s owner but nobody answers the door.
“With a civic mind and concern for the welfare of the skinny dog, rescuers brought it away, with the intention of bringing it to the vet for medical treatment,” they wrote.
A checkup at the vet revealed that the dog only weighed 3.13 kilograms, with muscle atrophy and low calcium content. It is believed that cataracts on both of its eyes were serious enough to render it blind.
For now, the dog — which was given the name Hope — is being taken care of at a foster home, and will be closely monitored and nursed back to health for several weeks. The case has also been referred to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), which are conducting investigations right now.
Purely Adoptions are adamant that they won’t be returning the dog to its owners until SPCA investigations have been completed. Updates provided by Hope’s current fosterer have been encouraging, too.
