Neighbours annoys the Isle of Man by suggesting accounts on the island are "dodgy"

From Digital Spy

Neighbours has found itself in trouble with the Isle of Man after a recent throwaway comment made by fan favourite Toadie Rebecchi appeared to suggest that having accounts held on the island was "dodgy".

In recent scenes, Toadie and Mackenzie Hargreaves suggested they should investigate some hidden assets of Rose Walker's husband James as part of their divorce proceedings.

During a conversation, Toadie and Mackenzie wondered if James had done any "dodgy things", mentioning "his assets: the boat, the city apartment, [and] his accounts in the Isle of Man".

Now, residents of the Isle of Man have taken umbrage with the remark, with a member of the island's Crown and External Relations Division telling The Sun that the soap's writers must have an "out of date" opinion of the island.

"I haven't watched Neighbours in decades," Peter Boxer said. "I remember it being about Charlene, Scott and Bouncer – it looks like the writers' knowledge of the Isle of Man is as out of date as my knowledge of Neighbours."

Another resident, Barbara Gordon, told the publication: "They're just jealous that we live in such a beautiful place. It's not a tax haven, it's our home and we pay our taxes."

The Isle of Man's reputation of being a so-called tax haven stems from its low tax rate, where the only two rates of income tax are 10% and 20%.

Unlike in the rest of the UK, residents on the island do not to have to pay capital gains tax, inheritance tax, or stamp duty on property.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5.
