Netflix Thriller ‘Carry-On’ Soars Past ‘Landman’ on Streaming Top 10 | Chart

It took a force like Taylor Sheridan to topple Max’s dominant run atop the streaming chart on the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report last week. This week, it’s another streaming super power’s turn, as Netflix denies Sheridan the rare opportunity to top both the streaming and linear top 10 lists.

Netflix’s return to the top spot is thanks to “Carry-On.” The thriller has a holiday angle – all of the action happens on Christmas Eve – which helped it give Netflix its first chart topper since “The Perfect Couple,” way back on the Sept. 19 edition of the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report.

“Landman,” the Taylor Sheridan creation that topped last week’s chart, slides down to No. 2 this week. It’s one of just two non-Netflix titles on this week’s chart as the streamer dominates holiday season viewership.

The other, “Red One” on Amazon Prime Video, is yet another holiday-oriented action movie, but the Christmas theme is much more obvious with this one. With Santa captured, the world turns to Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans to save the day. The film hit theaters back in November, and landed on Prime on Dec. 12. It arose such a clatter that it landed at number four in its chart debut.

Turning back to Netflix, “It Ends With Us,” a new addition to the streamer’s library, lands at No. 3. The romantic drama is based on the best-selling novel of the same name and debuted on the streamer after hitting theaters this summer and drew 2 million households to watch over its first week of availability. “Black Doves,” the Netflix original British spy thriller starring Kiera Knightley, drops two spots this week, landing at No. 5.

No. 6 is “No Good Deed.” The new comedy series’ cast is practically a hall-of-fame of TV actors from beloved series, including Lisa Kudrow, Ray Romano, Denis Leary, and Linda Cardellini. That sparked a lot of interest with audiences, as 1.3 million households clicked on the series over the first five days it was available.

No. 7 is “Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…” a special where the actor and comedian discusses his recent health scare on stage in front of a live audience.

The final three entries are all holdovers from last week’s chart. The sci-fi series “Subservience” comes in at No. 8 this week, down two spots from last week. The animated “That Christmas” is down just one spot, to No. 9, while our tenth entry, “The Madness,” has the steepest slide of the week. The conspiracy thriller series took a precipitous drop all the way down from No. 2, but hangs on the chart for the third straight week.

We started by talking about Taylor Sheridan’s rare bid to top both charts, so astute readers will not be surprised to see “Yellowstone” atop the linear chart this week. Paramount Network’s massive hit beats out four hours of “The Voice” this week, as the singing competition wrapped its 26th season. The two-hour live finale performances from Dec. 9 come in second and the following night’s big reveal is No. 3. A special one-hour recap managed to crack the Top 10 as well, coming in at No. 7.

The chart is alive with the sound of even more music this week, continuing with “An Evening with Dua Lipa” at No. 4. That’s followed by the classic film “The Sound of Music,” which aired on ABC on Sunday, Dec. 15.

“FBI” on CBS comes in at No. 6, and “Wheel of Fortune” brings us home, capturing the final three spots on the linear chart.

The Wrap Report provides an exclusive first look at the most watched movies and TV series from the past week across both streaming and linear television sourced from viewership trends collected from Samba TV’s panel of more than 3 million households, balanced to the U.S. Census.
