Netflix's 'Warrior Nun' Ends On a Massive Cliffhanger. Here's Where it Could Go in Season Two.
Almost no TV series wrap up all their loose ends in their season finales—you've got to set some anticipation for season two. But few end with cliffhangers as steep as the one Netflix's Warrior Nun leaves us dangling over.
In case a refresher could be handy, here's what goes down during the series' final minutes: Newly-minted halo-bearer Ava meets the angel Adriel in his tomb beneath the Vatican catacombs, where he's been trapped for centuries. The bad news is, however, that he's not an angel, but a devil, and when Ava's warrior nun pals from the Order of the Cruciform Sword dynamite down the walls that trapped him, Adriel is set free. It's revealed that
kindly Father Vincent has actually been working to liberate Adriel, his demonic lord, all along. Adriel summons a pack of demons who possess all of the Vatican bystanders, and the hoard engulfs Ava and the sisters.
And that's it! No resolution. No clue whether Ava and the ladies of the OCS make it out alive, or where on Earth (or not on earth) Jillian Salvius' son Michael might be since he hopped into her teleporting Ark machine. The show is practically daring Netflix to piss off its fans by cancelling it before Season Two.
Netflix generally waits a beat before announcing a show's future, and Warrior Nun just premiered in early July, so there's no official word yet on what the show's future might be. Still, showrunner Simon Barry told Den of Geek that the show's writing team is working on ideas for a followup season.
"We’ve thrown a lot of ideas around about where the show could go at the end of the season, of what we want to do next season. Having made several shows, I know that all of these things change as you go," said Barry. "Depending on how the show plays and how the audience reacts to it, you end up changing some of those ideas and rethinking them, so I don’t really want to say anything specific about that because I know that season two, if we’re lucky to get one, could redefine the show in ways that might change that."
Barry also told Inverse that he's down for "anything between five and seven seasons," so he's definitely it it for the long haul.
As Warrior Nun is still sitting pretty in the Netflix top ten nearly two weeks after its release, it seems like there's a pretty good chance the series will be renewed. The series is based on comics that ran for nearly a decade, so there are probably tons of storyline material to work with. Plus, we can't leave Michael stranded in the demonic dimensional abyss.
