Newborn found dead, stuffed in box

KUCHING: A newborn baby girl was found dead near the trash bins at the Samajaya Apartment in Jalan Usahajaya here this morning.

The infant, stuffed inside a box slightly bigger than a shoe box, was found abandoned by a cleaner at about 10am today.

The 36-year-old woman immediately alerted her employer, who in turn, notified the police of her shocking discovery.

A police team from the Kuching district Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was deployed to the scene and later arrested a 24-year-old woman to facilitate investigation into the case.

Sarawak CID chief Datuk Dev Kumar said the suspect from Belaga near Kapit is a third year student of a college nearby the apartment.

“Investigations revealed that the baby was delivered the same morning at about 6.30 am in the bathroom of the apartment unit,” said Dev.

He added investigation over the case was being conducted under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealment of birth by disposal of a dead body.

“We will change investigation into the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder if police finds evidence that the baby was still alive when she was abandoned,” he said, adding that this is the first baby dumping case reported in Sarawak this year.
