Bruno Guimaraes is reportedly ‘on the verge’ of signing a new contract with Newcastle, amid claims that Liverpool made a £100m bid for him late in the transfer window.

The Brazil international signed for the Magpies in January 2022 and his impact on the team so far has been overwhelmingly positive.

Guimaraes has made 61 appearances for Newcastle so far, scoring 10 goals and making six assists in the process. The midfielder was arguably their most important player as they finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season, too.

The 25-year-old’s performances definitely haven’t gone unnoticed, either. As reported by TEAMtalk, Liverpool made a late £100m bid to sign Guimaraes before the English transfer window closed last Friday, which was rejected.

Jurgen Klopp is thought to be a huge admirer of the Bazilian, so Liverpool are likely to try again for him in the future.

Newcastle, however, are looking to prevent Guimaraes from going anywhere for the foreseeable future by offering him a new contract. His current deal is valid until 2026.

Guimaraes close to signing new Newcastle contract

According to reputed transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle are ‘on the verge’ of tying Guimaraes down to a new deal.

On Twitterhe wrote: “Newcastle have made significant progress in negotiations to extend Bruno Guimarães contract.

“Agreement now on the verge of being completed Positive secret talks took place last 10 days — still final details to iron out then time to sign. Bruno’s new deal, close.”

This news will come as a major boost for Howe and his team. Guimaraes has started all four of Newcastle’s Premier League matches so far this season and will no doubt be one of their most important players again.

As for Liverpool and Klopp, it seems that they will have to accept defeat in the chase for Guimaraes. If Newcastle were unwilling to sell him for £100m this summer, it’s likely that he would command an even higher fee in the future.

With that in mind, the Merseyside club will have to switch their attention elsewhere if they want to bring in another top midfielder when the transfer window re-opens in January.
