NGO Open Arms rescues over 100 migrants in Mediterranean Sea

Migrant rescue ship Open Arms saved 120 migrants from two overcrowded rubber dinghies off the coast of Libya on Friday (January 10).

The crew onboard the ship is caring for the migrants, who were in shock and very weak, a volunteer told Reuters.

At least twelve people drowned when their boat sank in a separate incident near the Greek island of Paxos on Saturday (January 11).

The coastguard said twenty one people were rescued.

The United Nations said in October that more than 1,000 migrants and refugees had died in the Mediterranean Sea in 2019, for the sixth consecutive year.

More than 18,000 people have lost their lives in Mediterranean crossings since 2014...
