Nicole Kidman grapples with another big little lie in HBO's tense The Undoing trailer

Nicole Kidman finds herself in another psychological drama for HBO and her Big Little Lies cohort, executive producer David E. Kelley. With the first trailer for The Undoing, helmed by Bird Box director Susanne Bier, the network offers up fresh footage of what’s in store. The short answer, there are far more questions than answers, per usual.

Specifics have always remained under lock and key, but the mystery heats up. Kidman, who won an Emmy and Golden Globe for her role in Big Little Lies, portrays Grace Fraser, an Upper East Side therapist who is living the life she always wanted to live with her husband, Jonathan (Hugh Grant), and Henry (Noah Jupe), their artistic 12-year-old son.

“I had this idea of the perfect life, which I got from you and mom,” Grace tells her father, Franklin Reinhardt (Donald Sutherland), a former financier. “That’s really all I wanted.”

This vision of idyllic Park Avenue elitism is shattered in light of a violent death and revelations that arise regarding the Frasers, bringing in Detective Joe Mendoza (Edgar Ramirez) to investigate. Is Grace, as the trailer stipulates, one of those “law-abiding, high-functioning people” who “have the capacity to snap”? We don’t know yet, but we do know that, like Laura Dern in Big Little Lies, it involves a lot of dramatic screaming sessions on balconies and patios.

Bier, who also helmed AMC’s The Night Manager, directs all six episodes of this limited series, which will premiere in May.

“It’s so twisty and nothing is what it seems,” Kidman said of the six-part limited series on the Television Critics Association press tour. “It’s so hard to talk about it because as it unfolds you can reveal more things but right now, choosing to unknow things is a fascinating part of human nature. When you choose and what you choose to believe and what you choose to see, that’s the basis of a lot of the psychology of this series. We choose to see certain things. Also, everyone has secrets.”

Created, written, and showrun by Kelley, The Undoing also features Ismael Cruz Cordova (Berlin Station) as Fernando Alves, Italian-born Matilda De Angelis as Elena Alves, Lily Rabe (American Horror Story) as Sylvia Steinetz, Noma Dumezweni (Black Earth Rising) as Haley Fitzgerald, and Sofie Gråbøl (Gentleman Jack) as Catherine Stamper.
