Nicole Richie suggests people grow their own food during coronavirus pandemic: 'Everyone can do it'

Nicole Richie is suggesting a new way that people can help to ease the impact on high-risk groups during the coronavirus outbreak, encouraging those that don’t rely on supermarkets for specific needs to start growing their own food.

The piece of advice was brought up during an appearance on Miley Cyrus’s Instagram live series Bright Minded on Friday, when the designer and former Simple Life star talked about the importance of looking into supporting local food banks during this time.

“With all of these kids out of school, there are millions of kids that are now left without lunches,” Richie said.

“It’s actually really important to find your local food bank and find out what they need. A lot of them need donations. I would say that that is the biggest thing.”

Richie also suggested that it would provide more opportunities for the elderly to grocery shop freely without the threat of contracting the illness from others in the store.

“In a time where everyone is hoarding food and we’re trying to stay out of grocery stores as much as possible in order to give elderly people, people with specific allergies and specific food limitations, in order to give way to those people, it’s not a bad idea and it is possible to start growing your own food,” she said.

The mother-of-two elaborated to say that the idea of growing food “sounds like a very big deal.” However, she said, even in a New York City apartment with one available window sill, it’s possible.

“You can do it,” she said. “It’s a human skill and right now I think it’s a really important time to look into doing that.”
