Nigel Barrow: Man dies after house explosion in Derbyshire

A man has died following a house explosion in Derbyshire.

Nigel Barrow, 78, of Ollersett Avenue in New Mills, suffered life-threatening injuries in the blast on Tuesday and was airlifted to Sheffield's Northern General Hospital.

Derbyshire Police has now said Mr Barrow died on Friday.

An investigation led by Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service into the cause of the explosion, which led to nearby homes being evacuated, is underway.

Officials day that due to the damage caused to the property, the investigation has yet to be completed and a further review of the scene will take place early next week.

Police officers, the ambulance service and an air ambulance crew were called to the scene after 08:07 GMT along with staff from gas distribution company Cadent.

The fire service said 12 properties in the area had been evacuated and other residents living nearby were asked to keep their doors and windows closed.

High Peak Borough Council set up a rest centre for residents at New Mills Leisure Centre.

All residents have now returned to their homes.
