Ever since the Pokémon series of Japanese role-playing games made its appearance on the Game Boy in 1998, the titles were stellar hits all across the world due to its “gotta catch ‘em all” mantra and simple-yet-complex gameplay. It’s definitely no different right now when it comes to publisher Nintendo and developer Game Freak’s latest entry, Pokémon X and Y.

The company that bore Mario revealed that it sold 12 million copies of the 3DS RPG worldwide. This labels it the fastest-selling title in the 3DS library. The company sold 11.6 million copies last year since its debut in October. In conjunction to this, Nintendo also revealed that it sold more than 42 million 3DS since last December, which led to one in four owners owning either Pokémon X or Y.

While this sounds well and good, Pokémon X and Y has a long way to go to reach the astronomical numbers of its predecessors. Pokémon Red and Blue for the Game Boy sold 24 million copies worldwide within a span of eight year. Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire for the Game Boy Advance sold 16 million copies in lifetime sales, while Pokémon Black and White for the Nintendo DS sold 15.4 million units.

Regardless, there’s no sign of the Pokémon franchise slowing down. Nintendo itself sold over 245 million games in the series, from the mothership titles to spin-offs like Pokémon Trozei and the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series.
