KUALA LUMPUR: The driver of a black Proton Wira, captured on video speeding and crashing into a van along a Kajang-bound Cheras stretch yesterday, will not face any arrest.

Instead, he has been issued a summons by the police for careless driving.

Police today said the driver of the Wira, 26, was served with a summons under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959.

Under the rules, the maximum punishment for the offence is RM300.

City police’s Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department Legal Affairs officer Deputy Superintendent Shafie Daud said both drivers of the Wira and the van had lodged a police report yesterday following the 4.30pm accident, which took place near the Cheras Puspakom.

Shafie said the accident occurred when the Wira had tried to overtake the van.

“However, at the same time, a Perodua Kelisa had moved into the middle lane from the fast lane. So, to avoid colliding with the Kelisa, the Wira veered into the emergency lane.

“The driver, however, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the left side of the van. The van then overturned,” he said, adding that the 62-year-old van driver sustained light injuries to his right hand.

The 37-second video clip, which was widely shared on Facebook yesterday, depicted the Wira speeding just before the accident occurred.

The driver of the Wira had been roundly lambasted by netizens, who labeled his driving as dangerous.
