ALOR STAR: The debate between Mukhriz Mahathir and his former special officer Haris Che Mat, which scheduled to take place in Jerlun tomorrow will not materialise after all as police have rejected the permit application.
Kubang Pasu acting police chief Deputy Superintendent Chan Keat Seng in confirming the decision said the application was denied based on several factors.
Chan explained that the application was rejected because Haris, as the debate organiser did not comply with the stipulated time frame in applying the permit, as stipulated under Section 9(1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2010.
"According to the Act, the organiser is required to notify the respective district police headquarters at least 10 days before the event.
"However, we only received the application on Tuesday," he said when contacted.
Chan added that local residents and business operators in Padang Sera also objected to the debate as they were concerned about their safety should any untoward incident take place following the debate.
It was reported that Haris, who had served as Mukhriz special officer when the latter served as the Menteri Besar of Kedah, had challenged his former boss to answer allegations that Mukhriz has amassed more than RM1 billion in a short time frame.
Mukhriz had subsequently accepted the challenge and said he would donate RM500 million each for the Jerlun and Pokok Sena constituencies should Haris be able to prove the allegations.
Haris had on Tuesday filed the permit application and proposed the debate to be held at Sera Sentosa Inn, Padang Sera.
