No mercy for corrupt government officers

PUTRAJAYA: There will be no mercy for any government officers who are involved in corruption.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said those in the government involved in corruption would have to 'get out' from the service.

"If it was me I'd like to follow China where the punishment for corruption is to be shot dead but some don't agree to that here.

"So if any leaders found to be involved in corruption, they will have to get out, no pity, no consideration, no cover up," he said.

He said this was important in setting a good example to the people.

The prime minister was speaking to more than 3,000 administrative and diplomatic service (PTD) officers at a townhall session themed: Way Forward - The Rise of Authentic Leadership today.

"For example, with regard to declaration of assets, the previous prime minister did not have to declare his assets 'because he is not a civil servant'.

"But the prime minister now must declare all his assets because we want to show a good example," he said in answering a question posed on the rule of law which should be followed by PTDs.Reporting by Azura Abas, Mohd Husni Mohd Noor, Zanariah Abd Mutalib dan Hashini Kavishtri Kannan © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
