No more free rides for scammers

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 18 — It was an effort to attract more users to train services offering discounts and lower fares.

Unfortunately, unscrupulous individuals decided to take advantage of RapidKL’s generosity and will now have to pay the price for their antics.

Over the past two days, RapidKL brought to book 81 frequent travellers who misused the MyRapid concession cards.

Those nabbed were found to be using student concession cards (48 cases), senior citizen concession cards (31) and two for faking disability.

Prasarana data showed there were 117,097 holders of the MyRapid concession cards, with 76,295 being students, 37,480 senior citizens and 3,322 disabled.

Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Zohari Sulaiman said some parents took advantage of their children’s student status and misused the card to get a lower commuting rate.

“We found that some student cards were used by parents to commute to work,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The MyRapid concession card is reserved specifically for people with disabilities, students and senior citizens, who enjoy 50 per cent discount on all Rapid KL rail and bus services.

He added there have also been cases where senior citizens would give their cards to their family members for the same purpose.

“It should be noted that MyRapid concession card is not transferable as subjected in the terms and conditions.

“RapidKL monitoring teams will intensify the operation until no one dares to break the law,” he said.

Zohari said commuters who have been misusing the MyRapid concession cards will be blacklisted and their cards will be seized.

An official who requested anonymity said it was not difficult for the monitoring team to catch the perpetrators as they would only need to inspect the photographs printed on the card.

“During our spot-checks, we would compare if the holder’s face matches the picture printed on the card. Very easy to catch if you are misusing someone else’s concession card,” he said.
