A 39-year-old man has been arrested by Singapore police after an unattended bag in Hougang Station sparked security concerns on Sunday afternoon.

In a Facebook post that night, the police said they arrested the man for public nuisance after he had left a bag unattended at the MRT station’s train platform station, which triggered the temporary closure of the facility mid-afternoon.

After police checked the bag, they found only household items.

Train operator SBS Transit had first announced on Twitter at 2.56pm that all trains on the North East line would skip Hougang Station due to a “security incident”.

The police then said they were looking into a case of an unattended bag at the station, but they later said they had found “nothing suspicious” after checking the item. They commended SBS Transit staff for their alertness.

Earlier at 4pm, SBS Transit said that trains would once again stop at Hougang Station.
