You Can Now Buy a Piece of Grimes's Soul … for the Right Price
For her first online art exhibition, Grimes is selling prints, drawings, photographs, and other artwork through Gallery Platform Los Angeles and Maccarone Los Angeles.
Also among the items to bid on: a piece of Grimes's soul, titled "Selling Out."
At last, good news for fans of Grimes: The singer is now selling prints, drawings, photographs, and more in her first online art exhibition, simultaneously presented by Gallery Platform Los Angeles (May 28 through June 3) and Maccarone Los Angeles (May 28 through August 31).
Perhaps of the most interest to her fans and the art world alike, however, is a conceptual piece aptly called "Selling Out," which represents a portion of her soul but takes form as a legal document, and can be bought for the right price.
At first, “I didn’t want anyone to buy it, so I said we should just make it $10 million and then it probably won’t sell,” she told Bloomberg. With the help of her lawyer, they collaborated on drafting a contract for the sale of her soul. “The deeper we got with it, the more philosophically interesting it became,” she added. “Also, I really wanted to collaborate with my lawyer on art. The idea of fantastical art in the form of legal documents just seems very intriguing to me.”

Now, as the world reckons with a global economic recession amid the coronavirus pandemic, the contract will simply go to the highest bidder. She further explained to the outlet, “With the current state of the world, do you want to put something up for $10 million?”
While you may recognize Grimes for her genre-bending discography, she thinks of herself differently. “I made art 10, 12 years before I ever touched a keyboard,” she said. “I see myself as a visual artist first and foremost, and I’ve always felt strange that people know me for music.”
