NTAs: Fleabag fans outraged after Mrs Brown's Boys wins over Phoebe Waller-Bridge's hit show
Fans of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's hit show Fleabag are in uproar after the Golden Globe-winning series was beaten by Mrs Brown's Boys at the National Television Awards to win Best Comedy.
Waller-Bridge's dark comedy, which has enjoyed huge success at the Emmys, Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards, was overlooked at the NTAs in favour of Brendan O'Carroll's lewd Saturday night sitcom.
Mrs Brown's Boys also won over Ricky Gervais's hit Netflix comedy After Life, which received acclaim from a number of critics. It has since been renewed by the streaming service for a second series.
While O'Carroll made sure to praise Gervais's show as "one of the best things I've ever seen" as he collected his award, fans on Twitter remained outraged by the win.
"Mrs Brown's Boys beating Derry Girls and Fleabag at the National Television Awards is yet another example of why the British public shouldn't be allowed to vote for things," one person tweeted.
Another wrote: "Mrs Brown's Boys just beat Afterlife and Fleabag to win Best Comedy at the National Television Awards if you're still wondering how Brexit came to pass."
"Zero faith in humanity," someone wrote, while another said: "We aren't a nation of shopkeepers, we are a nation of idiots."
The fact that Mrs Brown’s Boys beat Fleabag makes me so sad on multiple levels and it is reflective of the general level of intellect in this country

If ever you needed proof that Britain is well and truly fucked, look no further than how the British public voted for Mrs. Brown's Boys over After Life and Fleabag for Best British Comedy, a show so horrifically unfunny you can actually feel your braincells dying as you watch it.

Unlike other awards ceremonies, the NTAs are voted for by the British public. Other winners on the night included Jesy Nelson, who won Best Factual Programme for her cyber-bullying documentary Odd One Out, and Peaky Blinders, which won Best Drama.
