KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 — Former radio deejay Faizal Ismail said yesterday he could not hear clearly the caller who had sexually harassed Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar, following public backlash over the talk show.

Host Faizal, also known by his moniker FBI, had during the show agreed with the caller, but now insisted the organisers had immediately apologised to the PKR vice-president after listening to a playback of the comments.

“I couldn’t hear clearly the details of what the caller said and could not give an accurate and appropriate response,” he said on his Twitter account.

“And when I heard the playback, I realised [what had been said] and we apologised to her immediately.”

He also stressed that he opposes comments that belittle women.

“What was done by the caller was uncalled for,” he added.

In the show hosted by Faizal and celebrity host Fara Fauzana, a caller who identified himself as “Azrul” said Nurul Izzah should take better care with her dressing — pointing out that he could see the MP’s underwear and breasts.

Speaking to Malay Mail, Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh said organisers of the “live” talk show must be held responsible for what happened and should apologise over the “embarrassing incident”.

Nurul Izzah has since responded to the incident in an article for Malay Mail, saying: “No way was that caller’s behaviour acceptable on any level.”

She also called for action from all levels of society to change the country’s attitude towards women, including legislation against sexual harassment.
