NUTRITION MONTH

LEGANES, Iloilo (PIA) - Media members and school children here led in a National Nutrition Council - organized vegetable planting at the Leganes Elementary School, in Leganes town, Iloilo as part of a program marking 38th National Nutrition Month themed "Pagkain ng gulay ugaliin, araw-araw itong ihain." The newly-formed Western Visayas Nutri Media Circle, led by Elena Pabiona of Radyo ng Bayan chose the activity as a launching pad for more media involvement in good nutrition advocacy. NNC Regional Coordinator Nona Tad-y said Leganes Elementary School was chosen because of its well-maintained vegetable garden supervised by its agriculturist teacher.

MARKET REPAIR

BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occ. (PIA6) - The Bacolod City Central Market has benefited from support funds granted by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) from the Seal of Good House Keeping award earned by the city. Repair of the market will include improved roofing, comfort rooms upgrading and building of a comfort room for the disabled. "The central market is the first to obtain this kind of support from DILG's local government support fund or LGSF," said Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia, who was at the groundbreaking for the R1.5-million market repair project set to be completed November, 2012.

PEDESTRIAN OVERPASS

CEBU CITY, Cebu (PNA) - The Cebu City Council wants the construction of a pedestrian overpass and more enforcers to be deployed on Gen. Maxilom Ave. to manage traffic and complement ongoing infrastructure development in the area. The council committee on traffic management said installation of an overpass is needed to "eliminate conflicts created by pedestrian movements" in the area. This is expected when Taft Property Venture and Development Corp.'s Horizons 101 condominium project is completed and operational.

G.S.I.S. SCHOLARSHIPS

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) - More low-income government workers will now have a chance to get their children through college with a scholarship grant. Government Service Insurance System-Capiz head Glorietta Dublas said three scholarship grantees for the GSIS enhanced College Scholarship Program are being sought. The program is part of GSIS's 75th anniversary celebration this year aimed at ensuring GSIS low-income members would be given opportunity to send their children to college. Selection of scholars will be done by accepting scholarship nominees from members holding a salary grade of 24 or below or its equivalent.

VETERINARY CARE

CATBALOGAN CITY, Samar (PIA) - Veterinarian volunteers with the United States Navy (USN)'s Pacific Partnership 2012 mission conducted 12 Veterinary Civic Action Program (VetCap) missions in 10 sites in Samar and two in Northern Samar, treating a total of 1,000 animals in the process. Treated were birds, pigeons, chickens, monkeys, cats, dogs, carabaos, cows, pigs, and goats along with the Calbayog City Veterinary Office which assisted in the VetCap mission by giving oral and injectable vitamins and in deworming procedures.
