NYPD Detain Protesters During Anti-Eviction Demonstration in Manhattan
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) detained several people in Manhattan on October 1, during a protest demanding local officials cancel rent and stop evictions.
New York’s “eviction moratorium” preventing eviction action, which was previously extended, expired on October 1.
Protesters set up furniture in the street, blocking traffic, to symbolize those evicted from their homes due to their inability to pay rent during the pandemic, organizers said.
Video filmed by Wendy Brandes shows NYPD officers detaining protesters at the intersection of Broadway and Park Place after making an announcement that protesters were “unlawfully obstructing the roadway.”
“This protest brought together diverse groups to call for a continued moratorium on evictions during the [COVID-19 pandemic],” Brandes wrote on Instagram. “The previous moratorium expired today.
