SUNGAI PETANI: An octogenarian drowned after he fell off his boat in Sungai Muda this morning.

Abu Bakar Udoh’s body was recovered at about 12.50pm, almost five hours after he was spotted falling overboard by two fishermen at 8am.

His son, Mohd Naim Abu Bakar, 33, said it was part of his father’s morning routine to check on the traps that he has placed in the river to catch fish and prawn.

“The fishermen saw my father falling into the river but when they approached the boat, they could not see any signs of him in the water.

“They rushed back to Kampung Jawa, were we live, to get help,” he said when met near the river.

Naim said his sister called him at about 10am to tell him about the incident.

Meanwhile, Tikam Baru Fire Station chief Yaakob Ishak said the deceased was found trapped among some duckweeds, not far from where he fell.

“His body was sent to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for post-mortem,” he said.
