Olympic Esports Week to feature 9 virtual sports competitions in Singapore

These competitions will crown the first winners of the Olympic Esports Series in in-person finals at Suntec

SINGAPORE — The inaugural Olympic Esports Week, to be held in Singapore from 22 to 25 June, will feature nine virtual and simulated sports competitions.

These competitions will crown the first winners of the Olympic Esports Series, said the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in a media release on Wednesday (1 March).

Invited professional and amateur players from around the world will begin to qualify for the in-person finals in front of fans at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The featured games are:

  • Archery (Tic Tac Bow)

  • Baseball (WBSC eBASEBALLTM: POWER PROS)

  • Chess (Chess.com)

  • Cycling (Zwift)

  • Dance (JustDance)

  • Motorsport (Gran Turismo)

  • Sailing (Virtual Regatta)

  • Tennis (Tennis Clash)

  • Taekwondo (Virtual Taekwondo)

The finals will be streamed across Olympics.com and Olympic social channels. In addition to the finals, the Olympic Esports Week will also feature technology exhibitions, show matches and expert panel discussions.

Sports associations welcome event

National sports associations in Singapore welcome the global event. Tan Cheng Han, president of Singapore Taekwondo Federation, said, "These exciting features present the possibilities of athletes competing across gender as well as age groups while retaining the athleticism and excitement of the sport.

"Through e-taekwondo, we hope to further the reach of taekwondo through innovative and fun experiences for athletes and the sports community.”

Wednesday also saw the announcement of the steering committee and local organising committee for the Olympic Esports Week.

IOC vice-president Ng Ser Miang and Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth and Trade and Industry Alvin Tan are the co-chairs of the steering committee. The local organising committee will be jointly led by former national swimmer Mark Chay, and Roy Teo, Sport Singapore's chief of industry development, technology and innovation group.
